What is PON?
PON(Passive Optical Network), which means there is no any electronic devices and electronic power supply in the Optical Distribution Network,All the ODN are composed by the Passive Optical Devices like Fiber Optical Splitter,WDM,etc,no need the expensive active electronic equipment.
A PON including an OLT(Optical Line Terminal) which installed in Central Control Station,As well as a number of matching ONUs(Optical Network Unit) installed in user sites. The optical distribution network (ODN) between the OLT and the ONU includes the optical fiber as well as a passive optical splitter or a fused coupler.
PON system structure mainly composed by the optical line terminal (Optical Line Terminal OLT) in the central office, the Optical distribution network (Optical Distribution Network ODN)which including passive optical devices, as well as the terminal optical network unit / optical network terminal (Optical Network Unit ONU/ONT Optical / Network Terminal) in user sites, the difference is ONT directly located in the user terminal, but there is other networks between ONU and users, such as Ethernet) and element management system (EMS),usually used by Tree topology structure of point to multipoint.
The outstanding advantage of PON network is to eliminate the outdoor active equipment, all the signal processing functions are completed in the switch and User home equipment . And the early investment stage of this access way is small, most of the funds to be postponed to the user Positive access input. Its transmission distance is shorter than that of the active optical fiber access system, and its coverage is smaller, but it Low cost, no need to set up the room, easy maintenance. So this structure can be economical service for home users.
